Homage to Catalonia
Homage to Catalonia
By: George Orwell
Homage To Catalonia is a biographical novel written by
in which he
talks about his experiences in Spain in the front during the Spanish Civil War. Homage means dedication or living in honor.
In the book, George Orwell is in Lenin Barracks in
. Lenin Barracks is a soldier house where the people believe in communism. While Orwell was in Catalonia, he had an encounter with an Italian man and had never met the man and the man asked Orwell if he was Italian. He answered back in bad Spanish "No, ingles. y tu?" George Orwell seemed to like the Italian man but knew he couldn't see him again because of his first impression would change afterward.
While living in the filthy barracks, there was often a wastage of food, everywhere one would look was a pile of decaying food. At every meal, a basket of bread would be thrown away, which was terrible, considering the civilian population was short of it. Orwell had to drink his white wine out of a
which he thought of as absolutely dreadful. He demanded a drinking cup for his meals, and had even gone on strike to show his extreme disapproval of the poron.
Orwell served as both a private and a corporal in Catalonia and Aragon from December 1936 until June 1937. The political party whose militia he served with, (the
, an anti-Stalinist communist party), was declared an illegal organization and Orwell was subsequently forced to flee or face imprisonment.
Homage to Catalonia holds the story of Orwell as he fought with Spain against the Italian fascist government. This story is not merely one that is made up but rather a biography of what Orwell did during the war. His time there shows the revolutionary movements and the ways their lives were and things that were used such as poron. This biography is a way Orwell tells his experiences and his struggles during this time.
In his time in Catalonia, there had been fighting around October, in the hills which Orwell had gazed upon. On the right side of the battle, was the P.O.U.M., and on the left was the
(Socialist Party of Catalonia, Partido Socialista de Catalunya in Spanish.)
During this revolution, social classes were demolished and everyone was on the same level. The Spanish revolution had caused a major outburst among the people. “Also I believed that things were as they appeared, that this was really a workers state and that the entire bourgeoisie had either fled, been killed, or voluntarily gone over to the workers side.” This revolution had made radical changes in the area and it was seen on the streets. There were revolution songs and sayings said on loudspeakers all day long. The posters had surrounded the walls of the entire town and the wealthiest classes had ceased to exist. Anyone who was of the upper class decided to blend in with those of the lower class in order to be alive. Orwell found this whole situation very strange and unlike anything he had ever seen. Orwell goes on to explain his experience in Catalonia.
