Iron Maiden is a British heavy metal band that was formed in London. The current lineup consists of lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarists Adrian Smith, Dave Murrayand Janick Gers, bassist Steve Harrisand drummer Nicko McBrain, but the band's lineup changed very often in its early years. From their first year of being active in the music business, 1975, to now, they have gone through five vocalists, twelve guitarists, and five drummers. The only original member that is still in the band is Steve Harris, who was one of the band's co-founders.
"Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, having sold over 80 million albums worldwide without significant mainstream or radio support." Many modern-day heavy metal and hard rock bands put Iron Maiden at the top of their list of influences, along with other bands that are considered "the founders of heavy metal", such as Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer (also known as the "Big Four" of thrash metal).
Iron Maiden is famous for their innovative guitar work. At the time of their first appearances, they were one of the earlier bands to popularize heavy multiple- guitar work. The riffs for many of their songs contain complex two or even three-part harmonies, and they are famous for the dueling twin guitar solos that are so popular in their songs.
In Persepolis, Iron Maiden is mentioned at a point in the book where Marjane is beginning to get more and more into Western culture. When her parents go on vacation, one of the souvenirs she asks them to bring back to her is an Iron Maiden poster, which they have to sneak through customs, since Western culture was disapproved of in Iran at the time.
