"Kids in America"
is a song by British singer
, released in the United Kingdom as her debut single in 1981, and in the US in 1982.
It was an immediate hit, peaking at number two on the UK singles chart, and repeating that success all around the world. The following year it became a Top 30 hit in the US. In the summer of 1981, the track appeared on Wilde's self-titled debut album.
-flavored song has since become a pop classic and was the start of a highly successful career for Wilde, in which she would become the highest-selling and most charted British female soloist of the 1980s. Her father and brother continued to write songs for her (with the latter also given production credits), although in later years Wilde herself and her brother would usually be credited with the songwriting.
In Persepolis, this is one of Marjane's favorite songs. As she begins to get more and more interested in Western culture, she goes to further lengths to obtain and be part of it. When she asks her parents to bring her back a Kim Wilde poster (among other things) from Turkey, they hide it inside her father's coat to get it through customs. Marjane goes and buys a Kim Wilde tape from the black market salesmen so she can listen to this song, despite the risk of getting arrested.
