Monopoly is fun!

Players compete to acquire wealth through stylized economic activity involving the buying, renting, and trading of properties using fake money, as players take turns moving around the board according to the roll of the dice. The object of the game is to bankrupt the other players.

The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity.

But it actually

takes on a deeper

meaning and

symbolizes

Capitalism in books such as Persepolis.

Monopoly comes from the latin roots "Mono" and "Poly" literally meaning, "Many of One." This is because a monopoly is when one entity, as stated before, takes control of many other people, by leveraged buyouts, forced removal, etc. to become tycoons of that certain trade, good, or luxury. When this happens, the monopolizer can either lower or raise the price (the latter being the more common) with the consumer having no other options to buy that one product (ex: Tuscan milk products corners the market on all dairy products, and then they make milk $20 a gallon. There are no other generic sources of milk, unless you milk your own cows yourself. This leaves you two choices: either buy the outrageously priced milk or have no milk at all and take vitamin D and Calcium supplament pills.)

"It can be useful when thinking about monopoly to look at two extreme cases. One is a pure monopoly, in which one company has complete control over the supply or sales of a product for which there are no good substitutes. The other is pure competition or perfect competition, a situation in which there are many sellers of identical, or virtually identical, products." http://www.linfo.org/monopoly.html

A good example of a modern-day monopoly would be "Wal-Mart" or "Starbucks."

These two popular chains have put many "Mom & Pop" stores out of business, making the choice for many consumers in the United States to either go Wal-Mart or go hungry.
"Monopoly" the game was made by Charles Darrow in 1935. Monopoly first came out to the stores on
November 5, 1935 by the company Parker Brothers. Its the worlds most popular game because its
pass from generation to generation. The game says it was invented by Charles Darrow but the game
actually go back until Lizzie Magie came out with a game called "The Landlord's Game" which has to
do with the same way monopoly is played.
