hussein.jpgSaddam Hussein- From 1979 until 2003 Saddam Hussein was dictator of Iraq and gained his power after a Baath coup where he became dictator. He led Iraq through a decade long war with Iran and invaded other neighboring countries. He wanted to become leader of a leading powerful nation where he had all the power there was. He was a corrupt leader and held many revolutionary accomplishments while he was in college. While he was dictator he killed many people who got in his way and this way he was able to make sure he was always safe. George Bush with the US, ran Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in the Gulf War when Saddam Hussein attempted to take over, in 1991 with Saddam still in power. He went into hiding when he realized people were looking for him. US forces found him in an underground pit near the town of Tikrit. He was trialed in court for about 1982 deaths and was beheaded in Baghdad on December 30, 2006. When he was the dictator of Iraq, he ruled Iraq as a Secular state even though the majority of Iraqis were Muslims.

What does the 2008 Republican Nominee for President have to say?

The government of Saddam Hussein is a clear and present danger to the civilized world and the values that unite our people. His moral code is so perverse that he has gassed his own people. He has attacked five of his neighbors. His will to power has so affected his judgment that he has started two major wars and lost them, each time imperiling his own grip on power. He is the worst kind of modern-day tyrant--a conscienceless murderer who aspires to omnipotence and who has repeatedly committed irrational acts since seizing power.

Obama statement on the execution of Saddam Hussein

U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement on the execution of Saddam Hussein:

"Today the Iraqi people have found justice in the death of a dictator who brutalized, tortured, and killed thousands of innocent men, women, and children. But to find the lasting peace that has eluded their nation since his downfall, the Iraqi leadership and the government must work harder to find a political solution to their burgeoning civil war so that Saddam's iron-handed brutality is not replaced by endless chaos, conflict and bloodshed."

Saddam was the fifth president of Iraq and was in office from 1979 until 2003. He also played a key role in the 1968 coup that brought the party to long-term power.
"Saddam, which means "he who confronts," was born in a village called al-Auja, outside of Tikrit in northern Iraq. Either just before or just after his birth, his father disappeared from his life. Some accounts say that his father was killed; others say he abandoned his family." http://history1900s.about.com/od/saddamhussein/p/saddamhussein.htm
