Scuds

Scuds are a series of tactical ballistic missiles created by the Soviet Union during the cold war.
During the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq was the first nation to use these missiles. This was mentioned in the graphic novel Persepolis.

The missles range in length, from 15 feet to as large as 40 feet. The actual part that explodes (called a Warhead) is only a few feet in length, the rest of the space is reserved for the fuel needed to propel the rocket hundreds of miles to it's target. Unlike bombs dropped from airplanes that fall at a 90 degree angle and impact as soon as it touches an object, scud missles go through any object at about an 170 degree angle, going through any object until it hits a foundation or solid rock. Therefore hiding in a bomb shelter will be of no use if your building has suffered a direct hit.
