The Rape of Nanking
The Rape of Nanking is a book by Iris Chang on this event in history with the same name. It has been called " the forgotten holocaust of WW2." This event is an example of Japanese imperialism. The Japanese decided that they had too little land and way too much people. They didn't have enough resources/food/space so they decided that they would conquer China. There were several other events that surround the massacre that occurred in Nanking. Iris Chang talks about how Japan felt hatred towards Westerners and wanted vengance on them. (I'll give more details later.)
Anyways, basically, The Rape of Nanking was basically a holocaust. It happened in 1937. The Japanese captured the city. They raped many women, killed many men, women and children. The japanese had very cruel methods of torture/killing. One included burrying victims alive. Another was to bury the victim waist deep into a pit and chain their arms so that they couldn't move and then have German Shepards attack them.
This event was about 7 weeks long. Yet more people died then than in individual countries during the war. At the end of the war, Britain lost about 110,000 people (i have to check the stats in the book). Keep in mind that this is during a 7 year period. About 7 million Jews died at the hands of Hitler/the Nazis. Again, remember that this over a period of many years. In Nanking, in just 7 weeks, the number of people who died ranges from about 250,000-350,000. (again, i need to check the book for the stats.) Now that is a lot of deaths!
*(I only just started the book so I will post more information as I read more of the book.)
