Karbala is a city in Iraq. It is located about 60 miles southwest of Baghdad. It is the capital city of Karbala Province. It is considered to be one of the holiest cities after Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and Najaf. It is best known as the location of the Battle of Karbala. Karbala is also known as the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's (S.A.W) grandson and a Shi'ah martyr. It is also the home to the shrine of Imam Abbas, Hussein's half-brother.

After the death of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), conflict broke out between the two Islamic sects: Sunni and Shi'ah. Both groups had different perspectives on who should succeed the prophet as leader of Islam. Shiites believed that it should be the descendants of the prophet whereas the Sunni's believed that it should be chosen by the people. Ergo it led to a conflict between the two groups which still exists today.

Info on Karbala

Karbala is a city in Iraq that has about 520,000 citizens living there. Karbala is considered one of the holiest cities to Islam, especially toward the Shiites. It started in 680 when Husayn ibn Ali wanted to become caliph. Husayn would be caliph only if Caliph Mu'awiyya, however when he dies Husayn was never made caliph. Yazid, Muawiyya's son, became the caliph, and Husayn had a war with Yahzid in Karbala, where Husayn died in battle. Karbala is considered a utopic place to the Shiites, and many Shiites get buried there when they die.

Some points on the Battle of Karbala
680: A battle between Husayn and Caliph Mu'awiya over the control of the Caliphate leads to the death of Husayn, and the final division between the orientations later known as Shi'i and Sunni Islam.
1802 April: An army of 12,000 Wahhabi soldiers occupy Karbala, and slay 4,000 of the inhabitants. They destroyed the holy sites of Shi'ism to the extent that they had to be rebuilt later.
2004 March 2: More than 110 people killed during the festival day of Ashura, in an attack on the Husayn Mosque.
